Last summer, we reported that Sony Pictures was developing an emoji movie. A lot has happened since then, and we had started to forget all about it and move on with our lives. Now, however, some plot details for the forthcoming flick have been unveiled, and it all sounds just as 💩 as we originally thought.
The Wrap reports that a great deal of emoji movie tidbits were spilled at CinemaCon this week. Specifically, news that real-life apps will play a significant role in the film — which appears to take place inside a smart phone.
So far, music streaming site Spotify is the first app that's officially on board with the emoji movie. That said, the whole thing sounds rather punny — music streaming will apparently be represented with an actual stream that characters travel on with boats.
Writers Eric Siegel and Anthony Leondis also shared a statement about just how this emoji movie is expected to play out: "Inside your phone, there's a secret world — and we enter through the text app where we discover Emoji Valley, where the industrious Emoji live and work."
So it's kind of like the Smurfs, except with the purple eggplant image you text to your Tinder dates?
Apparently the Emoji eventually travel to "the world of wallpaper" (a.k.a. the phone's homescreen), where they discover that each app is a different world to be discovered. And that's where all of the wonderful brand synergy comes into play.
We're naysaying it now, but we'll undoubtedly check out this bizarre emoji movie when it hits theatres in 2017.
