The 93rd annual Academy Awards were previously set to take place on February 28, but they'll now happen on April 25, 2021. This will be the latest in the year that the Oscars have ever taken place since the show first started broadcasting on television in the 1950s.
"For over a century, movies have played an important role in comforting, inspiring, and entertaining us during the darkest of times. They certainly have this year. Our hope, in extending the eligibility period and our Awards date, is to provide the flexibility filmmakers need to finish and release their films without being penalized for something beyond anyone's control," Academy president David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson said in a statement. "This coming Oscars and the opening of our new museum will mark an historic moment, gathering movie fans around the world to unite through cinema."
The delay means that films must now have a qualifying release date between January 1, 2020, and February 28, 2021. Naturally, movie releases have been messed up in 2020 thanks to the ongoing social distancing measures required by the COVID-19 pandemic.
So if you were planning on shooting and releasing an Oscar-qualifying film and were worried you wouldn't have the time, you've been given an extra two months. Get on it!
