Michiyo Yasada, the woman responsible for Studio Ghibli's eye-popping colour palettes, has passed away. She was 77 years old, and died of an undisclosed illness.

Yasada launched her career in the early '70s before working on Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind with Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata. From there, she became the colour designer for the fabled Studio Ghibli.

The artist retired in 2008, but return to do colour design on The Wind Rises in 2013. Various sources report that Yasada passed away on October 5.

"What I like best is when I am building up the colours in my head, thinking of how to get the tone worked out," she told the Los Angeles Times in 2009. "Colour has a meaning, and it makes the film more easily understood. Colours and pictures can enhance what the situation is on screen."
