Its final season is set to arrive early next year

The U.S.S. Discovery will be embarking on her last mission. The producers of Star Trek: Discovery have just announced that its upcoming fifth season will be its last.

Set to air early next year, the contentious spinoff will end after 65 episodes. The show's first season premiered in September 2017, and, for its faults, has some pretty stellar casting, including Sonequa Martin-Green as Michael Burnham and Michelle Yeoh as Philippa Georgiou — whose multiverse jumps must have prepped Yeoh for her role in Everything Everywhere All At Once.

"Thank you for your love of DISCOVERY," wrote producers Alex Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise on the Star Trek website. "Thank you for inviting us into your homes, and for trusting us with this show. Thank you for appreciating and supporting our incredible cast and crew. Thank you for the passion and excitement you've brought to this fandom — online, at conventions, and when we've seen you out in the world."

They continued:

And rest assured, we're not going anywhere just yet! There's still work to be done to finish season five and we're excited for you to see our exciting and satisfying conclusion. We also have some very special fan events planned for the months ahead, so that we can all celebrate DISCOVERY and our incredible cast together. More details to come on that — and on our premiere date — very soon. Until then, as Burnham would say: Let's fly!

Until its last episode airs, we'll be wondering if any other celebrity cameos will pop up. Who knows, maybe we'll see David Cronenberg's character again?
