Shelley Duval Opens Up About Mental Illness in Controversial Dr. Phil Interview

BY Josiah HughesPublished Nov 17, 2016

Shelley Duvall, the actress best known for playing Wendy Torrance in The Shining and Olive Oil in Popeye, hasn't acted since 2002. In a new interview with Dr. Phil, she revealed that she's been struggling with debilitating mental illness.

In the interview, which will air in full tomorrow (November 18), Duvall demonstrates that she is suffering from mental illness. When asked about Robin Williams, she claims that she believes the actor is still alive and "shape-shifting." She also says she believes there is a "whirring disc" inside her.

"I'm very sick, I need help," she adds, to which Dr. Phil answers, "That's why I'm here."

Though the episode has not yet aired, many are criticizing the show for what they see as exploitation. Vivian Kubrick, daughter of The Shining director Stanley Kubrick, released a statement in which she said, "Unquestionably, this is purely a form of lurid and exploitative entertainment — it's appallingly cruel."
