South Korean actor Lee Sun-kyun — who played wealthy father Park Dong-ik in Bong Joon-ho's acclaimed 2019 film Parasite — was found dead in a car in central Seoul park on Wednesday (December 27). He was 48.
Lee's body was found after his wife reported to police that he'd left home after writing what appeared to be a suicide note, as reported by South Korean news agency Yonhap.
Lee had been under police investigation over his alleged use of marijuana and other psychoactive drugs, having been questioned by police on three occasions. South Korean drug laws are harsh, with drug crimes punishable by six months in prison, or up to 14 years for repeat offenders and dealers.
Lee spoke briefly about his arrest back in October, saying, "I sincerely apologize for causing great disappointment to many people by being involved in such an unpleasant incident. I feel sorry for my family, which is enduring such difficult pain at this moment."
Lee is survived by his wife Jeon Hye-jin and two sons.
