Well, that was quick. After just one season, Mark Millar's superhero series Jupiter's Legacy has been cancelled by Netflix.
The show — helmed by Daredevil's Steven S. DeKnight — only just premiered on May 7, but already Netflix has pulled the plug on the series. However, it appears that Jupiter's Legacy will live on as a reworked anthology series in some way.
And really, it might be for the best. After all, Netflix apparently shelled out a whopping $200 million USD for Jupiter's Legacy, but it failed to land with both viewers and critics. Here at Exclaim!, we gave the show a measly 4/10, and headlined the review "With Jupiter's Legacy, the "Self-Aware Superhero" Genre Has Jumped the Shark."
While it's a bit unclear what the future holds for Millar and his Millarworld, it may include Supercrooks — which exits in the same universe — in some way. But for now, all the Jupiter's Legacy cast has been freed from their contractual commitments to return for more episodes.
In response to the news, here's what Millar had to say on his Twitter:
Jupiter's Legacy is a vast and rich space with lots of characters to mine, and so I'm happy to share that our next step here is a live-action version of the Supercrooks comic I created with Leinil Francis Yu a few years back. Given where we're going next, we've made the tough call of letting our incredible cast out of their show commitment as we continue to thoughtfully develop all realms of the Jupiter's Legacy saga. We're confident we'll return to it later and just want to say thanks to you guys for your continued support and to the cast and crew who made this look so great.
