HBO will explore personal development company/alleged sex cult NXIVM later next month in The Vow, and the first trailer for the docuseries has now arrived.

Directed by Jehane Noujaim and Karim Amer, The Vow is said to "take a deep, nuanced look at the experiences of a number of people deeply involved in NXIVM over the course of several years," and "seeks to reveal the issues behind the headlines and explore the emotional toll of unfolding events on these individuals," per a press release.

The teaser first weaves together interview clips of founder Keith Raniere with scenes of togetherness and enjoyment, before adopting a more ominous tone. Voices are heard, claiming, "It is manipulative, but it's a good manipulation," and "Our commitment is our power," before ending with multiple different people explaining the "vow" required of NXIVM members.

In 2018, Raniere and Smallville actor Allison Mack were arrested on federal charges, including sex trafficking. Last June, the former was found guilty on criminal charges including sex trafficking, forced labour trafficking, identity theft and more.

Halifax-born/Vancouver-based musician Jon Bryant released an album about his experiences in NXIVM last year.

The Vow premieres August 23 on HBO.
