Rowling has alienated nearly every Harry Potter cast member, fellow author Stephen King and about half of Twitter over her controversial stance on transgender and nonbinary identities — who else does she have left to offend? Well, now even her biggest fans have turned their backs on her, as two major Harry Potter fan clubs have also joined the conversation, passionately denouncing the author's harmful comments.
Popular HP fanbase websites MuggleNet and The Leaky Cauldron have both released their own statements, speaking out against the author's "gender-critical" views and standing firmly with the LGBTQIA+ community.
An excerpt from the Leaky Cauldron's statement reads:
Although it is difficult to speak out against someone whose work we have so long admired, it would be wrong not to use our platforms to counteract the harm she has caused. Our stance is firm: Transgender women are women. Transgender men are men. Non-binary people are non-binary. Intersex people exist and should not be forced to live in the binary. We stand with Harry Potter fans in these communities, and while we don't condone the mistreatment JKR has received, we must reject her beliefs.
The fandoms' statements arrive after Rowling went on a 3,800-word rant, complaining about being "cancelled" for her TERF status — during Pride Month.
Her latest tirade stems from her problematic response to the use of inclusive language in an article about support in the era of COVID-19 for people menstruate, in which she insinuated such language erases the "concept of sex" and thus removes "the ability of many to meaningfully discuss their lives."
