'Game of Thrones' Creators to Helm New 'Star Wars' Film Series
Published Feb 06, 2018Beyond its current film-a-year pace, the Star Wars universe is now set to expand even further with the news that Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will helm a new series of films for the franchise.
Disney announced that the two will write and produce a new series that is separate from both the main episodic Skywalker saga and the recently announced trilogy being developed by Rian Johnson. Release dates have yet to be set for the new films.
"David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today," Lucasfilm Kathleen Kennedy said in a statement. "Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting."
In a joint statement, Benioff and Weiss said, "In the summer of 1977 we travelled to a galaxy far, far away, and we've been dreaming of it ever since. We are honoured by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete."
The eighth and final season of Game of Thrones is expected to hit HBO in 2019. Meanwhile, Disney shared the first teaser for Solo: A Star Wars Story over the weekend.
