It's remarkable how quickly things can change in a year. For instance, last fall saw Bob Chapek, Disney's then-CEO, question the desires of Disney adults the world over in feeling that grown-ups would rather watch adult-oriented programming streaming on Disney+ as opposed to "another animated movie."
Now, not only has Chapek been succeeded by predecessor Bob Iger, but the House of Mouse has offered up a four-figure box set we imagine most adult fanatics will happily pay through the nose for.
In celebration of its centennial anniversary, the Walt Disney Company has compiled 100 animated films for the Disney Legacy Animated Film Collection, an ornamented 118-disc Blu-ray package celebrating features from Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar and the now-shuttered Disneytoon Studios.
Per the optical media oracles over at The Digital Bits, the Disney Legacy Animated Film Collection arrives November 14 and retails exclusively through Walmart for a staggering $1,500 USD — a price that would surely test anyone's fandom these days.
Not only does this set look like something you'd find in a vault deep below the Magic Kingdom, but it's as if the product designers examined the physical media resurgence elsewhere, put on their mouse caps and asked themselves, "How do we elevate this to vinyl LP box set levels ofextortionate elaborate?"
As you'll find with a trailer for the set below, that's achieved through each of its three volumes being able to fold out and stand up like a storybook, original poster designs found within, a collectable Wish lithograph, a certificate of authenticity, digital codes for all 100 films included and — rather extravagantly — a crystal set of Mickey Mouse ears engraved with the "Disney 100" anniversary logo.
The Digital Bits also notes for the discerning Disney viewer how none of the included films have been remastered for the format, meaning titles previously released on Blu-ray use the same transfers. Additionally, only the Pixar titles will come complete with their existing special features discs.
Find the complete list of 100 films included in the below.
Here's hoping that some of these titles will get sensibly priced, standalone releases for the slightly less fanatical Disney viewers among us — and that the tome doesn't signal a future where physical media is purely for those who can afford it as entire continents are made digital-only.
