"People still think it's the real voice. For the first couple seasons of 'Brooklyn,' I remember people would meet me and they would get actually mad."

Stephanie Beatriz is perhaps best known for playing grumpy cop Rosa Diaz on long-running sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine, but anyone who has seen her out of character may have been surprised to discover that her real voice is nothing like her Rosa's. Now, Beatriz has explained the reason for Rosa's deep voice, as well as discussing fans' disappointment at her real speaking voice.

Appearing on the fast food podcast Doughboys — co-hosted by actor Mike Mitchell, of Love and The Tomorrow War fame — Beatriz revealed that she gave Diaz a deep voice because she had blown out her voice from teaching a workout class.

"When I auditioned for Brooklyn Nine-Nine, I had been teaching workout classes, and I had been screaming at the top of my lungs teaching these classes," she said. "And so I got the audition, and I was like, 'Fuck! My voice is fucked!' So what I did was drop my voice into a lower register and auditioned with that voice — and they liked it. And when we shot the pilot, my voice was back to normal, so I was trying to find it again."

She went on to reveal that fans are disappointed when they hear her actual, much higher, voice: "People still think it's the real voice. For the first couple seasons of Brooklyn, I remember people would meet me and they would get actually mad. They would be really mad. Because I'm not that person, and they felt bamboozled. And I understand, because people are so used to reality TV that they want the characters that they see on TV to be that way in real life."

Diaz and Mike Mitchell both appear in the new Peacock adaptation of the video game Twisted Metal (although they steer clear of promoting that project in the podcast episode because of strike guidelines). Beatriz is also the lead voice actor in Disney's Encanto.
