Filmmaker Jeff Barnaby, who directed the films Rhymes for Young Ghouls (2013) and Blood Quantum (2019), has died at the age of 46. An announcement confirms that he died following a year-long battle with cancer.
Barnaby hailed from the Mi'gmaq community of Listuguj, and lived in Montreal. He began his career with a series of short films that made waves at Sundance Film Festival and TIFF. His debut feature, 2013's Rhymes for Young Ghouls, targeted Canada's residential school system, and helped launch the career of Devery Jacobs (who is currently on the cover of Exclaim! as a star of Reservation Dogs). His 2019 follow-up, Blood Quantum, was about a zombie plague that Indigenous peoples were immune to.
Barnaby was also a musician who scored his own films.
Barnaby is survived by his wife Sarah Del Seronde and son Miles.
