Earlier this year, Canadian actor Michael Hogan — best known for his role as Saul Tigh on Battlestar Galactica — experienced a serious head injury from a fall, resulting in complete paralysis on his left side, as well as memory loss and cognitive dysfunction. To help with related expenses, friends and family have now launched a GoFundMe campaign.
"Though it is hard to imagine, I think it's fair to say it is unlikely Michael will be able to work again. And for these past seven months, neither has [his wife] Susan, given the circumstances," the fundraiser page reads. "She is facing an uncertain future to navigate other than knowing that the financial demands will continue to be great."
In the 24 hours since the couple's neighbour Shari Ulrich launched the fundraiser, they've already received nearly $180,000 of their $300,000 goal.
"Needless to say, Susan is overwhelmed and moved beyond words by the response," Ulrich wrote in an update. "Your words of care, appreciation and love, hold the true value of the results of sharing his story with his friends and family."
Battlestar costar Tricia Helfer shared the fundraiser with her followers, writing, "Our amazing XO has been fighting for months now. Michael Hogan is one of the dearest, funniest, most talented men I know, and is going through an incredibly challenging time."
As of press time, Hogan is being looked after at the Berkley Care Centre in North Vancouver. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, visitations are very limited, which is why the fundraiser is set at such a high goal. The family aims to raise enough to move Hogan home and have him cared for by live-in aids, so he can spend more time with his family.
The Ontario native's acting catalogue extends far beyond his work on Battlestar. The 71-year-old actor began his career over 40 years ago and is credited on dozens of television series including Fargo, Smallville and The L Word, among many more.
Head to the GoFundMe campaign for more details and for updates of Hogan's health.
