Chicago-based crate diggers Numero Group made a name for themselves via their Eccentric Soul series, but have also had a hand in reissuing slowcore outfit Codeine and previously highlighted long-lost folk sessions through their Wayfaring Strangers releases. Label founder Rob Sevier has now leant out his archivist talents to Chocolate Industries for that label's upcoming Personal Space: Electronic Soul 1974-1984 compilation.
Chocolate Industries will release the set on April 10, and a press release from the label explains that Personal Space examines the shift in once home recorders and polyphonic synthesizers became more readily available in the '70s and '80s.
"If the independently pressed record made the galaxy of recorded music that much larger, the burgeoning home studio became the black hole from which little escaped," the statement reads. "Flowering in the mid- to late '70s, affordable high-quality tape recorders, synthesizers, and sample drum machines permitted the aspiring artist to never leave his home, never request the assistance of another human being."
Described as "peaceful, bizarre, funky and often humbly ahead of its time," the tracks were recorded by reasonably unknown artists. You can check out the tracklist below and listen to the Makers' "Don't Challenge Me" at the bottom of the page.
