For a band that have yet to release a full-length, Young Rival are already presenting themselves as a heavy contender. As we told you last month, the trio of gritty garage rockers hailing from Hamilton, ON recently signed to Sonic Unyon and announced an April 13 release of a debut full-length. But though they've been testing the waters with their new material throughout the fall, we've been anxiously anticipating when the boys would hit the road again to celebrate the official release. Well, we didn't have to wait long.
Young Rival just announced Ontario and Quebec tour dates (see below) that'll rock them past May Day. The announcement came after last Friday's (March 5) stunt when they aired a performance on Chatroulette.com of one of their new songs, "Authentic." The YouTube video (see below) has well over 5,000 views so far, and shows the ridiculous reactions of surprised Chatrouletters who stumbled on the band - reactions almost more entertaining than the music itself. It was a pretty creative and effective way to get eyes on their site where the track is available for free download.
But even though they lack an official full-length, don't confuse Young Rival for novices. Their self-titled, self-released EP from 2008 was recorded by New York producer Emery Dobyns (Patti Smith, Battles, Lou Reed) and had a hit single, "Your Island," which lit up the charts on both CBC and BBC radio. They've played alongside Born Ruffians, Tokyo Police Club and are getting remixed by Junior Boys.
As previously reported, the new self-titled LP was produced last summer with Jon Drew (Fucked Up, Arkells, Tokyo Police Club) and we're curious as to what the "grit-infused, wildcat rock" they profess to have will mean for the trio's newest effort.
Tour dates:
4/16 Sudbury, ON - The Townehouse
4/22 London, ON - Call The Office
4/24 Windsor, ON - Phog Lounge
4/ 29 Guelph, ON - E-Bar
4/30 Toronto, ON - The Horseshoe Tavern
5/1 Hamilton, ON - The Casbah
5/6 Montreal, QC - Le Divan Orange
5/7 Ottawa, ON - Cafe Dekcuf
5/8 Kingston, ON - The Mansion
