Quickly following the release of Wires 11th album proper, Object 47, the iconic post-punk pioneers have announced a new string of North American tour dates. Starting with Montreal, the band will hit up several U.S. and Canadian cities on the upcoming tour, stopping off in Toronto, Ottawa and Vancouver along the way.
And while over the years Wire have been pared down from a foursome to a duo composed of Colin Newman and Graham Lewis, on the road, Laikas Margaret Fiedler McGinnis will join the groups two principals on rhythm guitar. Newman recently spoke to Exclaim! about Wires declining membership, as well as McGinniss role in the band, as she helps them sport "tunes with zoom in a live setting.
"We realised that we couldnt start adding other members 30 years into it. Thats not what we really want it to be, Newman said. "We wanted to keep when it comes to the writing what weve built upon.
"Because Margaret has done the same sort of thing with Polly Harvey, we thought that she might be a good person to try out. It takes a certain type of person to step into that role. We didnt want to hire some young bloke that wanted to use this as a stepping stone to something else, not that we would want to rob someone of that ambition. Plus, it would make us look old. It was a difficult task.
