The Wilderness

"Systems"

Don't confuse them with similarly named bands like Wilderness or the Wilderness of Manitoba, Toronto's the Wilderness are one of a kind, and they're quickly earning fans with their unpredictable art rock sound. Their debut effort .272 contains just five songs, but these combine to form a suite that lasts almost half an hour. For a taste of the group's sound, you can download .272's opening track "Systems."

Along with the track's foot-tapping beat, atmospheric electro textures and droning guitars provide the backdrop for singer Lee Piazza's chanted vocals. Just when you think it's all over, the arrangement slowly builds back up for a cathartic coda, ending with squalling guitar feedback.
