Weird Candle

'Regeneration' (album stream)

BY Alan RantaPublished May 13, 2015

Vancouver-based synth-punk duo Weird Candle are set to release their debut album, Regeneration, on May 22 through Weyrd Son Records, and Exclaim! is premiering it now.

Weird Candle released a single back in 2013 as a trio, but they have since pared down to just Kilroy Katerwol and Caleb Blag. Blag goes heavy on drum programming and lead synth, while Katerwol tends to focus on bass synth and lead vocals, together channelling their '80s industrial and darkwave influences into tracks destined for mixtape placement alongside Front 242, Nitzer Ebb and Animal Bodies, as evident on Regeneration.

Mastered by studio guru Josh Stevenson of Otic Sound, Regeneration has a menacing sound, propelling the dark lyrics of Katerwol as he "tells a story through his words, an intimate reveal of his own personal deaths and rebirths, ups and downs; it's a story of hardship, tragic love, and of ongoing mental turbulence in relation to the world around him."

Regeneration will be released in two limited, hand-numbered vinyl editions. Those who caught the Hot Heros compilation Mint Records put out in 2014 will know what to expect, as "Year of the Dog" previously appeared there, but everyone can now check out the whole megillah below.

Weird Candle will be celebrating the record with a show at Vancouver's Hindenberg on May 16 followed by a show in L.A. at the Echo on June 14.
