The Velvet Underground's Self-Titled Album Gets Six-CD Reissue for 45th Anniversary

BY Alex HudsonPublished Oct 1, 2014

The Velvet Underground's first two albums have already received deluxe 45th anniversary reissues, and now their self-titled album from 1969 is getting the same treatment. Due out on November 24 via Polydor/UMe, it includes a heap of extra material.

While the original album featured 10 tracks, this deluxe set ups that number to 65, which are spread across six CDs. The first disc contains a remastered version of the widely distributed stereo mix of the album, while the second disc contains Reed's personal mix (dubbed the The Closet Mix by guitarist Sterling Morrison), and the third disc is the promotional mono mix.

The extra material is included on the other three discs. There's an unreleased album containing various unheard mixes (including material heard on the outtakes albums VU and Another View), plus live recordings from the Velvet Underground's shows in San Francisco in November 1969. These multitrack live recordings have been compiled and mixed for the first time. The version of "Sister Ray" is nearly 37 minutes long. All of this is housed in a case-bound book and comes with new liner notes. See the tracklist below.

In addition to the Super Deluxe Edition, there will also be a remastered single-CD reissue and a two-disc Deluxe Edition.

The Velvet Underground was a major stylistic turnaround for the group. While prior albums had been at times loud and experimental, this one is more quiet and sparsely pretty. It was also the band's first album feature new recruit Doug Yule and first without former member John Cale.

Frontman Lou Reed died a year ago this month.
