The Velvet Underground are reissuing their 1969 self-titled album in deluxe form this month, and we can preview the contents of the box set ahead of time thanks to a live version of "I'm Waiting for the Man."
This song comes from the earlier album The Velvet Underground & Nico from 1967, but the reworking here makes it sound much more like something from the self-titled album. This post-John Cale rendition strips away the fuzz-flecked surge, turning it into a mellow ditty. It speeds up noticeably in parts, at times coming a little closer in spirit of the original.
This recording comes from a 1969 show at San Francisco's Matrix club. While these shows have been released before, this has a newly cleaned up mix. Hear it below.
The 45th anniversary edition of The Velvet Underground comes out on November 24 via Polydor/UMe.
