Following a string of EPs and singles over the past few years, grungy Vancouver trio Brutal Poodle have announced their debut album. HI APATHY will be out on August 16 through Westerly, the brand new label run by members of Dead Soft.
The trio of John Johnston (ex-Slow Learners), Karmin Poirier (ex-SBDC) and Dustin Bromley (ex-Jock Tears, currently of Apollo Ghosts' live lineup) recorded this debut full-length with Jesse Gander at Rain City Recorders in Vancouver. Gander also handled mixing. Last year's "Drainage" single was recorded in the same sessions, although it's not on the album.
The album sessions were originally planned for May 2020, but lockdowns forced them back to September 2020. A press release notes that the delay resulted in a more cohesive sound: "Regretfully we ended up trashing the song about dolphins, and I think there was a bossa nova at one point?"
Sample the album by checking out the sunny video for lead single "Skyscraper" below. It was directed by edited by Bromley, with filming by Leila Meshgini (Alimony, NIIMIHK), and the VHS-esque video emphasizes the song's '90s alt-rock vibe.
HI APATHY will be released digitally in a run of 100 cassettes — an appropriate format considering that Bromley appeared in Exclaim!'s recent feature about Canadian artists' tape collections.
