The Unicorns Reunite to Open for Arcade Fire

BY Alex HudsonPublished Jun 12, 2014

Earlier this year, rumours swirled that quirky lo-fi pop faves the Unicorns would be reuniting for the 10th anniversary of their breakup, but Nick Thorburn quickly quashed those reports. Now, however, it seems that the reunion is on after all.

The Unicorns' name pops up on a new press release from Dan Deacon, who is touring as Arcade Fire's opening act in the coming months. According to his calendar, the Unicorns are also on the bill for Arcade Fire's two shows in Inglewood, CA, plus three more in Brooklyn. All of these shows are in August.

Although the Unicorns haven't released an official statement, they've launched a brand-new Twitter account. A description on the account reads "The Unicorns, 2014" (which is the name of one of their decade-old songs), and their lone tweet is a photo of Thorburn and Alden Penner hugging (see above). They've also got a SoundCloud account, but there isn't any music on it.

Interestingly, their profile photo on both SoundCloud and Twitter shows an overhauled version of the album cover from 2003's Who Will Cut Our When When We're Gone?, implying that a reissue may be in the works.

For now, we'll just have to wait and see.

Arcade Fire have several other newly announced openers, including Constantines, Spoon, Owen Pallett and tUnE-yArDs. You can get all the details here.

UPDATE: In an email to Pitchfork, Penner said the Unicorns have "no touring plans currently outside of those shows."
