Twin River

'Rough Gold' (EP stream)

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Mar 15, 2012

Half of the title to Vancouver alt-roots unit Twin River's debut EP Rough Gold may be a bit misleading, considering there's not a ragged riff or rasped vocal on the four-song outing. Formed by guitarist/vocalist Courtney Christine Ewan and White Ash Falls member Andy Bishop, the mini-effort instead shimmers without sounding over-polished.

From Bishop's sinuous six-string leads to Ewan's Southern twang to sparse tambourine hits, tracks like heartbreaking strummer "Can't Keep This Alive" and hepped-up hoedown "Jangler" sound as if they were captured deep in canyon country, rather than the living room of Sun Wizard member Malcolm Jack, who also plays bass in the band.

The lineup is filled out by Keep Tidy/Pleasure Cruise drummer Dustin John Bromley and Chains of Love/Mode Moderne's Rebecca Gray. Check out the EP, which the band are hoping to issue as a seven-inch, down below. If you're into it, the release can be bought over on Bandcamp.
