No venue is safe in Toronto, not even the CN Tower-neighbouring Rogers Centre, which may soon be replaced with a new site that features a smaller arena, as well as condos, offices, and retail and public spaces.
According to a report from the Globe and Mail, the arena formerly known as the SkyDome might be demolished in favour of a new stadium "as part of a downtown Toronto redevelopment" project.
The Globe's unnamed source said that the home of the Toronto Blue Jays could even be moved to another lakefront site should plans for redevelopment at 1 Blue Jays Way fall through.
Originally built in 1989, the SkyDome was purchased by Rogers back in 2004, when it was renamed Rogers Centre. The arena best known for its retractable roof has been the subject of private redevelopment plans for over two years.
Rogers has not communicated any concrete plans to bring the wrecking balls in just yet, but official plans for the redevelopment are expected to be announced sometime in 2021.
"Prior to the pandemic, we were exploring options for the stadium but through this year our primary focus has been keeping our customers connected and employees safe, so there is no update on the Rogers Centre to share at this time," chief communications officer Sevaun Palvetzian told the Globe.
Construction on the new site is expected to take five to eight years.
