Bay Area indie pop band the Umbrellas have announced the release of their sophomore album Fairweather Friend, arriving on January 6, 2024, via Slumberland Records. They've also shared the album's lead single, "Three Cheers!" along with an accompanying music video.
Following the success of their self-titled debut in 2021 and tours with acts like Papercuts and Fucked Up, the Umbrellas built upon their jangly, lush indie-pop sound and cranked up the volume on their latest album.
"I think we got tired of people saying, 'Oh you're so much louder than I thought you'd be!' Our early recordings were really sweet and earnest… and we wanted it to be louder," bassist Nick Oka shared in a press statement.
According to a press release, the 10-track album was originally conceived in November 2022, during which the band would write and record out of singer and guitarist Matt Ferrera's basement, in an ad-hoc studio space.
Regarding the lead single, the band aimed to mask a poignant statement underneath warm, cheery instrumentation. "It's a pseudo-political song about power struggles that occur in a job situation, or a friend group. It's an observational song," said Oka.
