Steve Hardwell Is Responsible for Smash Mouth Dunking DJ Khaled on Twitter

He was a king that did

Ah, 2018, the year of DJ Khaled's major keys, one of which is not going down on his wife, apparently. While you may recall the comment that fuelled the X (Twitter) feud between him and Smash Mouth, you may be unaware that the comment came right from the late, great Steve Hardwell's (smash) mouth.

A refresher for those who can't even remember what they ate yesterday: five years ago, Khaled revealed to The Breakfast Club podcast that he doesn't perform oral sex on his wife, even though he expects it from her. Why? Because men are kings, and they serve their queens in other ways, according to him.

The internet was quick to ratio him for this lame excuse, including the official Smash Mouth Twitter account, which posted, "A King who doesn't is no King at all." Now, it's come out that the band's recently passed frontman Steve Hardwell was responsible for the iconic tweet himself.

It turns out that Smash Mouth has a Social Media Goblin of their own, Ron Xepoleas. He explained to Rolling Stone that he was with Hardwell when he made the comment, and immediately posted it for him. "I was with Steve when we read [Khaled] doesn't perform oral sex on women," he said. "That was Steve's direct response, so I tweeted it."

Khaled is far from the only person the band has Twitter beef with. They've also thrown virtual hands with Drake and the Oakland A's baseball team, among others. "I've been around these guys since junior high, so we are all ingrained with similar opinions on culture, social issues, favourite sports teams, etc.," Xepoleas explained.

The Smash Mouth Twitter account has been iconic for so long that Exclaim! actually talked to Hardwell about it back in 2017. "We've never taken ourselves that serious so interacting with people online is sort of the same thing. Any mention is a good mention in this biz," he said at the time.
