Texas act Spoon have been leading up to a new album for a while, offering a teaser video, song snippet and news of a new record label deal, not to mention some cryptic details set to arrive on June 10. Today (June 5), they've finally spilled the beans with the announcement of a new album.
According to NPR, the new release is called They Want My Soul. It's set to arrive on August 5 via Loma Vista, confirming the band have indeed left longtime label Merge.
The album was recorded by Joe Chicarelli (Morrissey, My Morning Jacket) and Dave Fridmann (the Flaming Lips, Sparklehorse), and also includes work from new Spoon recruit Alex Fischel, who also worked with the band's Britt Daniel in Divine Fits.
"Between 2001 and 2010, we put out five records, which is not a lot by '60s standards. But in terms of today's standards, it's pretty fast," Daniel told NPR. "I mean, especially since concert promoters run the business now. And that's the way you make money, is doing shows, you know? So we just needed a break. And when we got back together, I felt that that break was a good thing. And we were all excited about playing again."
The album's title is inspired by a middle-school bully that Daniel once faced. Things worked out in the end, however, as Daniel said, "He became a big Spoon fan."
In addition to a title track, there's also songs called "Knock Knock Knock" and "Inside Out," plus a cover of Ann-Margret's "I Just Don't Understand," which was originally recorded for Rookie but ultimately saved for the album.
As previously reported, Spoon dropped cryptic hints that something's set to arrive on June 10, posting a photo that reads "Spoon, R.I.P., June 10." Now that we know the album's title and release date, it's fairly safe to assume that the band's first proper single from the album will arrive then.
