Montreal duo She-Devils delivered a self-titled EP last year, and now they're ready to unveil plans for their debut full-length. Also a self-titled effort, the 10-track offering is due out on May 19 through Arbutus Records in Canada and Secretly Canadian elsewhere.
She-Devils is the project of Audrey Ann Boucher and Kyle Jukka, who blend the former's vocals with primitive electronic gear and an "amusement park of sounds" to create what a press release dubs "a fun-house world of beautiful chaos."
They cite musical inspirations as wide-ranging as Iggy Pop, Madonna, T-Rex and Can, as well as film and art influences from Gregg Araki, Yayoi Kusama, Andy Warhol, John Waters and Quentin Tarantino. Fuelled by these works (and online tutorials), Boucher turned herself into a self-taught singer.
"I've always seen music from the perspective of an artist or music lover rather than that of a musician," she said in a statement. "When I sing over a loop, I don't feel like I'm in control of what I do, or that I am cerebrally engaged with making music, it's more like my subconscious is completely taking over my mind and it just comes out of my dreams."
It's a musical foundation that gels well with Jukka's on the new record, and you can hear their creative forces collide on the first single from the upcoming She-Devils, "Hey Boy."
