Seven Nation Barmy

The White Stripes found themselves to be unexpected heroes in Italy following the country’s World Cup victory. Thanks to Italian player Francesco Totti, the Detroit garage rockers became the biggest band in the nation when the footballer coaxed his team and fans into adopting the duo’s 2003 hit "Seven Nation Army” as their celebratory anthem. Jack White was moved, adding: "I am honoured the Italians have adopted this song as their own. Nothing is more beautiful in music than when people embrace a melody and allow it to enter the pantheon of folk music. As a songwriter it is something that is impossible to plan. Especially in modern times. I love that most people who are chanting it have no idea where it came from. That’s folk music.”
