Ryuichi Sakamoto has returned with details of a new solo LP. The composer will deliver 12 on January 17 via Milan Records/commmons.
12 follows Sakamoto's 2017 album async, and marks his first non-soundtrack solo LP since that time. Recorded between 2021 and 2022, the album collects 12 songs selected from "musical sketches he recorded like a sound diary" during his two-and-a-half-year battle with cancer.
Per the tracklisting below, 12's twelve tracks are titled and sequenced by the dates each were written, presented as "a diary-like collection of music that provides an intimate snapshot into this period of Sakamoto's life."
The composer shared of the effort, "…after I finally 'came home' to my new temporary housing after a big operation, I found myself reaching for the synthesizer. I had no intention of composing something; I just wanted to be showered in sound. I'll probably continue to keep this kind of 'diary.'"
Next month, Sakamoto will present a career-spanning performance — which includes a selection from 12 — recorded at Tokyo's 509 Studio with a ticketed livestream event. Following the concert, ticketholders will be able to access a sneak preview of the new album.
Earlier this year, Sakamoto reissued his series of collaborative albums with Alva Noto, and opened his own "Score Store."
In December, Milan Records will release a Sakamoto tribute album featuring Thundercat, Dev Hynes and more.
