Russia has been barred from participating in the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest due to the country's invasion of Ukraine.
The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) announced the news today (February 25) in a statement, writing, "The decision reflects concern that, in light of the unprecedented crisis in Ukraine, the inclusion of a Russian entry in this year's Contest would bring the competition into disrepute."
The EBU maintained that it is "apolitical," and the decision was reached after "consulting widely among its membership."
The 2022 Eurovision Song Contest will take place in Turin, Italy, with the finale set for May 14, 2022. According to the EBU, "We remain dedicated to protecting the values of a cultural competition which promotes international exchange and understanding, brings audiences together, celebrates diversity through music and unites Europe on one stage."
Just yesterday (February 24), the EBU said that Russia would be allowed to participate.
