Roxanne Potvin hasn't released a new album in five years, but she's finally set to return with For Dreaming next week. Exclaim! is letting you cut the long wait a little short, though, and giving you a chance to hear the album in its entirety right now.
The Montreal singer-songwriter has spent the half-decade since releasing Play learning and experimenting, taking two years of formal sound engineer training and working in a studio. Now, she's wrapped recording on her own new material, offering up 10 new tracks.
The basic songs were laid down at Ottawa's Little Bullhorn Studio with producer Dave Draves, and Potvin was accompanied by Mark McIntyre on bass and Timber Timbre's Olivier Fairfield on drums. From there, Potvin completed the album at her home in Montreal, roping in extra musical contributions from Christine Bougie guitar and lap steel, Chris Gestrin on organ, local musicians on harp and woodwinds, arranged by Antoine Gratton.
From the buoyant, groovy optimism of opener "I Thought I'd Miss You," through more subtly sombre songs like "Little Heartbreaks" and "The March," onto the bright twang and intimate observational lyrics of the title track, and finally bringing things to a gentle comedown with album closer "In Your Sleep," Potvin takes the listener on an emotional and engaging sonic trek that shows off her growth as a songwriter.
Hear it all come together for yourself, by giving For Dreaming an advanced listen in the player below before it officially arrives on March 18.
