After having its Canadian premiere in Vancouver in 2022 to rave reviews, the Pulitzer Prize-winning opera Angel's Bone will make its Toronto debut next month with three performances at the Harbourfront Centre Theatre from March 22 to 24. The production stars Asitha Tennekoon, Winona Myles, Alyssa Samson, Alexander Dobson and a talented chorus.
Created by composer Du Yun and Canadian librettist Royce Vavrek, Angel’s Bone follows the story of two vulnerable youths who find themselves lured into exploitative relationships with human traffickers. Despite these harrowing realities, survivors' resilience and the reclamation of power are at the heart of the story.
As such, the production team is engaged in an awareness and education campaign about human trafficking in Canada leading up to the March performances in collaboration with local community partner ARISE Ministry. Founded in 2013 with a mission to support survivors of sex trafficking and sexual exploitation, ARISE will be participating in post-show Q&As to answer audience questions about the work they do to combat human trafficking in Toronto.
Tickets for the two evening performances (March 22 and 23) and the Sunday (March 24) matinee are on sale now via the Harbourfront Centre website. Angel’s Bone is presented with a content warning of not being suitable for all audiences (particularly children), as it depicts the realities of human trafficking with scenes of suggested sexuality and violence — for further information and resources, click here.
