As previously reported, tomorrow (April 21) marks the release of post-punk vets Public Image Ltd.'s new One Drop EP. A couple of months ago, the band delivered a stream of the title track, and now the John Lydon-led ensemble have let loose closing track "Lollipop Opera."
As you can hear for yourself in the stream below, it's a bit of a head-scratcher. Stylistically, PiL still loves a good dance groove, as the tune meshes oscillating key lines, softened dubstep wub-wubs and acoustic guitars with a supple yet simple bass drum pulse. Things get real weird, though, when a distorted Lydon starts rapping old-school like a chattering Muppet about rocking at the lollipop opera. The rest of the song finds him seemingly improvising lines atop the beat.
Check it out below courtesy of NME.
The tune will also pop up on PiL's upcoming This is PiL, which arrives May 28 through their own PiL Official imprint.
