The Academy Awards announced the nominees for their 2014 edition today (January 16), with Pharrell Williams, Arcade Fire, Owen Pallett, Karen O and U2 all receiving nominations in the musical categories.
Spike Jonze's Golden Globe Award-winning Her got the majority of the musical attention, with Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman Karen O and Jonze receiving a nod in the Best Original Song category for "The Moon Song," while Arcade Fire and Owen Pallet's supporting score for the film was also nominated in the Best Original Score category.
Meanwhile, 2013 comeback sensation Pharrell Williams snagged a Best Original Song nomination for his Despicable Me 2 standout "Happy," as did aging anthemic rockers U2 for their Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom track "Ordinary Love."
Of course, the artists listed above won't be without their fair share of competition, as Oscar heavyweights John Williams (The Book Thief), Steven Price (Gravity) , Alexandre Desplat (Philomena) and Thomas Newman (Saving Mr. Banks) were also chosen as Best Original Score nominees for the 86th annual awards show.
