New Brunswick's Partner have announced the release of their new EP, Time Is a Car — and today have lifted anticipatory '80s pop rock-inspired single "Fear That Closes the Heart" and its accompanying Cartel Madras-directed video ahead of the forthcoming collection.

The EP is a follow-up to their 2019 sophomore effort Never Give Up; previously released singles "Not Today" and "Time Is a Car" will appear on Time Is a Car, which is slated for an October 7 release via You've Changed Records.

In a statement about "Fear The Closes the Heart," the duo opened up about the introspective track's message: how the sensation of fear can prevent someone from living in the moment. "The summer after we wrote this song, we went to the Folk on the Rocks music festival in Yellowknife, and participated in a collaborative project called 'Emerging Wildly' with Celeigh Cardinal and Cartel Madras," the band shared. "When Cartel Madras showed us their videos we immediately knew we wanted to work with them."

The video — directed by the Calgary hip-hop duo of sisters Eboshi and Contra — sees Partner dressed in their best Depeche Mode-meets-Rob Halford outfits.

"When directing 'Fear That Closes the Heart,' we wanted to reflect where the song lived nostalgically and emotionally," Eboshi said in a statement about the video. "People always do stupid shit and can be stuck in bad relationships."

She added: "That's what we wanted to bring to this track; a familiar, sentimental story of a love that could not be, but a love that is triumphant. Who knows what happens next, all that we know is that love made it through. I'm sure we could all use even a hint of that certainty in our current lives."

"Fear That Closes the Heart" marks the third song from the band's expedition to Noise Floor Recording Studio on Gabriola Island. Listen to the new single below.
