Muse

"Survival"

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Jun 27, 2012

Earlier this morning (June 27), we learned that skewed rock act Muse would be serving up a song called "Survival" as one of five official Olympic anthems at this year's London 2012 Olympic Summer Games. It turns out we won't have to wait until the games open July 27 to hear the track, as it has just made its way online.

You can stream the song over at the End 107.7, and it's a fittingly bombastic affair. "Survival" kicks off with parlour piano, while singer Matt Bellamy moodily, uh, muses, "I'm gonna win / I'll light the fuse / And I'll never lose."

What comes next are brooding gang-vocal chants seemingly sung by the gatekeepers at the Wicked Witch of the West's castle, some searing six-string leads, metallic chugging and glass-shattering operatic wails. It's surprisingly sinister for the world-unifying event, but better this than another saccharine ballad, à la Nikki Yanofsky's Vancouver 2010 anthem "I Believe."

As previously reported, the remaining anthems will be delivered by Delphic, the Chemical Brothers, Dizzee Rascal, and a collaboration between Elton John and Aussie electro popsters Pnau.
