Matt Paxton

'Let Me Rock N' Roll Tonight' (EP stream)

Vancouver-based music maker Matt Paxton is set to deliver a new set of songs next week with a new EP titled Let Me Rock N' Roll Tonight, and Exclaim! is giving you the chance to hear it right now.

Across five tracks, the singer-songwriter wears his heart on his sleeve, delving into themes of love, loss, desire and self-reflection. The tunes were recorded between Vancouver's Afterlife Studio with Erik Neilson and Toronto's Candle Recording Studio with producer Aaron Goldstein.

In addition to help behind the boards, Paxton also enlisted some guest cameos from Jesse Zubot (Tanya Tagaq, Dan Mangan), Ryan Peters (Ladyhawk, Daniel Romano) and Raven Shields (Wilderness of Manitoba), with members of Harlan Pepper making up his backing band.

Branching out from the usual folksy singer-songwriter sound, Paxton takes the opportunity to explore some more psychedelic material — and, of course, brings a hefty dose of titular rock'n'roll to the table as well. Aside from his travels across genre landscapes, the songs draw inspiration from geographical locales too.

"Pasadena" was inspired by a fire in his original hometown of Hamilton, ON, while "When You Get Back from Portland" pays homage to the United States' northwestern regions. Now, you can hear the whole collection come together from the comfort of your own home.

Grant the man his album title's wish and give the album a spin in the player below. Let Me Rock N' Roll Tonight is out on June 3 through Other Songs Music Co.
