Mary Timony Announces 'Untame the Tiger,' Her First Solo Album in More Than 15 Years

The follow-up to 2005's 'Ex Hex' arrives next year

Guitar hero Mary Timony has announced her first solo record in more than 15 years — Untame the Tiger is arriving February 23 on Merge, and it's being previewed today with chugging lead single "Dominoes."

In a statement about the new single, Timony said that "Dominoes" was "almost not on the record." She continued, writing, "We needed one last song, and I found a demo of it I had forgotten about at the last minute." "Dominoes" was mixed by Dave Fridmann and features David Christian on drums and Untame the Tiger co-producer Dennis Kane on bass.

Untame the Tiger was inspired by the end of a long-term relationship and the deaths of Timony's father and mother. It was recorded over two years during which Timony was the primary caregiver for her parents. "This was the hardest thing I've been through. Every week I had to manage a new crisis," she said of the period.

I started realizing that I gotta control the things that I can. Because I was making impossible decisions on behalf of my parents, creative choices now seemed more manageable. Since I had to confront the reality of loss, I realized what was important to me about being alive, and I became less scared. The record became my anchor in a time when I was losing so much around me. It felt like all I had—a guide that helped me through, and gave me hope.

Untame the Tiger was produced by Timony, Joe Wong and Dennis Kane and recorded over two years at Studio 606, Magpie Cage, 38North, and in Timony's basement. Chad Molter, David Christian and Brian Betancourt all contributed instrumentation.
