Montreal-by-way-of-Edmonton singer-songwriter and Exclaim! New Faves alum Marlaena Moore has announced her forthcoming fourth studio album, previewed today by new single "Hungry for God."
Because You Love Everything is due January 17, 2025, through Session, a new Bonsound subsidiary. The follow-up to 2020's Pay Attention, Be Amazed! was written and recorded in co-producer Scott "Monty" Munro's (Preoccupations) parents' basement, and was originally titled I Don't Really Know What I'm Doing Anymore — a name Moore said "resonated deeply with me during its creation, as it captured the sense of disorientation I experienced both personally and professionally."
"Yet, as I revisited these songs, I realized that Because You Love Everything is a more honest and hopeful representation of where I am now," the artist explained. "Despite moments of doubt and the temptation to quit, my true desire to remain creative and vulnerable through self-expression drives me to keep going. This album is a testament to that relentless pursuit."
Of the new single — which joins previously released album cuts "Unfaded" and "Pacer" — Moore added, "'Hungry for God' was written about a time in life when I was looking for the right things in the wrong places. Instead of fostering a deeper connection with myself and the ones I love, I was trying to hack it through drugs and shallow connections with people who did not have my best interest at heart. I sold myself out for a quick fix of feeling 'god like' and synthetically enlightened."
The singer-songwriter said she drew influence for the track, which features Preoccupations' Mike Wallace on drums, from "queen" Sarah McLachlan's "Sweet Surrender." Give the broodingly cinematic, sweeping "Hungry for God" a listen below, where you'll also find the full album tracklist details.
