LOC-NAR

'Hotter Water' (EP stream)

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Mar 13, 2015

Self-described as a "family of snack-rockers," Montreal's LOC-NAR are set to unleash Hotter Water today (March 13), and you can give it a listen right here at Exclaim!

The six-track collection follows up 2013's Sink of Mayo EP and Open Burger Surgery single, delivering more of the band's off-kilter, absurdist rock'n'roll.

The group's quirkiness is abundant from the get-go, opening with an ode to discounted Christmas plants on "Poinsettia Sale," before rolling into lead single "Black Salami." It's slacker rock at its finest, with nonchalant back-and-forth male/female vocals sort of trying to stay atop the chugging drum beat and twangy guitars. Those guitars swirl into dreamier territory on "50th State Fair" and explode into eerie distortion on "Castle Ratter" — which, if you didn't guess from the title, is a terrifying ode to a castle full of rats.

The new material was recorded at Poisson Noir, a space the band help run in conjunction with the Montreal's Don't Fall Collective, and was co-produced by the band and Bryce Cloghesy.

Hotter Water is out today, both digitally and on cassette. If you want a tape, though, you'd better act fast — only 72 copies were made. You can see the band's upcoming live dates below, and if you scroll past those, you can hear Hotter Water in its entirety in the player at the bottom of the page.
