When it comes to influential Krautrock bands, Neu! pretty much top the list, or at the very least make the top five. Despite only releasing a handful of albums, this '70s duo (made up of former Kraftwerkers Michael Rother and Klaus Dinger) went on to influence everyone from David Bowie to Joy Division to Stereolab and Fennesz, leaving in their wake some three decades worth of musicians beating along to their minimalist grooves, harmonic drones and of course, that "motorik" sound. It's only fitting then that a few of these groups now give something back to these trailblazing Germans, even if it's only a new tribute disc.
Titled Brand Neu!, this upcoming 14-track collection features a slew of admires offering up their own Neu!-inspired jams, including previously released songs by the likes of LCD Soundsystem, Primal Scream, Cornelius, Holy Fuck and Sonic Youth (who have contributed their Ciccone Youth track "Two Cool Rock Chicks Listening to Neu!"). And while it's obvious these groups have dug deep into the Neu! catalogue, there are a few not so obvious followers included on the comp, such as Oasis, who provide "I Can See It Now," and Kasabian.
Along with these tracks that you may or may not already own, there are also a few particularly noteworthy inclusions on Brand Neu!. One is a previously unreleased track called "Sketch 1_08" from Dinger's equally great post-Neu! band La Düesseldorf. Apparently, it's one of the last he worked on before passing away last year of heart failure, just four days shy of his 62nd birthday. Another is an unreleased Rother track called "Neutronics 98," and there is one more exclusive track on the mix by School of Seven Bells, who lend the song "Device Fuer M."
Here's the list of all the tracks included on Brand Neu!, which is due out May 11 on Feraltone:
1. Ciccone Youth (Sonic Youth) "Two Cool Rock Chicks Listening to Neu!"
2. Primal Scream "Shoot Speed / Kill Light"
