Any interview conducted by Nardwuar the Human Serviette is bound to divulge some previously unknown information. In his new video with Icelandic artist Laufey, it didn't take long for her to reveal that Montreal's late, great Oscar Peterson is her favourite jazz pianist ever to grace a set of keys.
Seconds after greeting her in the backroom at Neptoon Records, Nardwuar gifted her a 1952 vinyl recording of Peterson's performances at Carnegie Hall. The record features "I Only Have Eyes for You" and "Fine and Dandy."
Laufey, whose own music is jazz-infused, says that she stumbled across Peterson when she heard him performing on an Ella Fitzgerald record, and the rest was history.
"He's probably my favourite jazz pianist," she said. "I just thought his piano playing was really, really beautiful and had a lot of classical undertones to it and I grew up playing classical music, so I think that was the connection for me."
Laufey also revealed that her fandom even compelled her to visit Peterson's memorial statue in Ottawa when she was performing at the Ottawa Jazz Fest in June.
