A new recording studio has come to BC's interior. Propel Studios has taken over a former vacation rental space on Kootenay Lake in Kaslo to the province's southeast.

A full production suite including a live room, isolation booths and a control room aren't the only features of this new space; a 1,000-sq ft. deck overlooking Kootenay Lake and upper-floor living accommodations left over from the vacation rentals create a living space for recording artists.

Although the production studio is new, the space is familiar to musicians. In 2020, the building was home to the pandemic edition of the Kaslo Jazz Festival, which streamed performances from Jim Cuddy and Jill Barber, as well as Shakey Graves, Ocie Elliott, Fred PennerShred Kelly, Moontricks and more performing on the deck to a virtual audience.

General Manager Chyvonne Lynch has a vision of supporting local up-and-comers as well as established artists at Propel Studios. "We've had some high-calibre musicians from across Canada who have visited and want to record here," said Lynch. "There is so much talent in the Kootenay area, and so we also want to foster local, emerging talent by making our high-end studio accessible to our local musicians and youth."
