Art-pop innovator Julia Holter has announced her sixth studio album, sharing the news alongside a run of North American tour dates and the kaleidoscopic new single "Spinning."
Something in the Room She Moves is due March 22 on Domino. It's the long-awaited follow-up to Holter's last LP, 2018's Aviary, and includes last year's single "Sun Girl."
"There's a corporeal focus, inspired by the complexity and transformability of our bodies," the composer said of the album in a press release. "I was trying to create a world that's fluid-sounding, waterlike, evoking the body's internal sound world."
The title came about out of the blue, with Holter choosing to name the Logic file for what would later become the LP's title track the first time she saved it. In the months to follow, she was fixated on Peter Jackson's 2021 Beatles documentary, Get Back, and realized she had subconsciously flipped the gaze of their "Something" lyrics.
Of the new single, she added, "It's about being in the passionate state of making something: being in that moment, and what is that moment?" The track's clamorous catch-and-release lurches in these philosophical questions, with Holter singing, "What is delicious and what is omniscient? / What is the circular magic I'm visiting?"
The singer-songwriter will be taking the new record on the road this May, including Canadian stops at Toronto's Great Hall (May 13) and the Belmont in Montreal (May 14).
