JP Maurice

"Shapeshifter" (video)

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Jan 13, 2017

After releasing The Arborist in 2013 (spawning "Poison Heart"), JP Maurice has spent the last few years touring and recovering from a loss in his family. Turning inwards and focusing on his art in that time resulted in a new EP titled Girls, which is out today (January 13).

To mark the occasion, Maurice has shared a video for album cut "Shapeshifter." The clip was shot last fall in Vancouver, with the piano shots giving viewers a glimpse into the artist's own Blue Light studio, where the new EP was recorded.

"It's a fairly low concept/performance style video that touches on the themes of duality, dichotomy and comparison, which are the central motifs of the song and EP," Maurice tells Exclaim!

Director Brandon William Fletcher adds, "The contrast between major urban centres and densely wooded forests underscore those moments we appear to glimpse inside JP and reveal the truth beneath the 'great pretender.'"
