It's been a full decade since Jim Guthrie released his last proper solo album, 2003's Now, More Than Ever, and in the interim he has busied himself with everything from film scores, to videogame music to new bands. Now, he's finally back with Takes Time via Static Clang. Before the album's May 7 release, the entire album is available to stream on Exclaim.ca.
The material here spans several years, having between recorded between 2007 and 2012 by Guthrie himself and Mark Lawson (Arcade fire, Colin Stetson, the Unicorns). Guthrie told Exclaim! last year, "I have a new album in the works. I actually started it three years ago and then just stopped working on it only to pick it up again and then put it back down! I'm hoping to finish it soon because it's getting to the point of just plain lame."
The 11 songs balance folk influences with spaced-out atmospheric textures, with the results ranging from the quirky bubblegum bounce of "Taking My Time…" to the wistful melancholia of "Before and After" to the climactic grandness of "Wish I Were You."
