Earlier this month, we lauded the electronic production of DEBBY FRIDAY in naming the Vancouver-based artist one of our March New Faves. Now, she's displayed her artistry at greater length in a new audio play.
The 42-minute LINK SICK — which FRIDAY wrote, directed and scored herself — was created as her Master of Fine Arts graduate thesis project for studies at Simon Fraser University. It is both "a science-fiction exploration of the connective tissue of human experience as well as an experiment in sound art; blurring the lines between theatre, radio, music, fiction, essay, and internet art."
FRIDAY also serves as LINK SICK's narrator, guiding listeners through "a strange future peppered with blink-streams, automated protests, disembodied DJs, dancefloor orgies, and only the trendiest S/S 221 G-E two-piece club skins."
Joining her in "ambiguous dystopia and eternal rave" are Alex Zhang Huntai, Chino Amobi, Sam Rolfes, Hanna Sam, Storm Greenwood, Allie Stephen and Soukayna, while protestor characters were given their AI-generated voices by Replica Studios.
LINK SICK will soon mark FRIDAY's entry into the world of NFT art, with the entire piece set to be minted through marketplace Opensea next week.
