Alison Mosshart is best known as the lead yowler in garage rock bands the Kills and the Dead Weather, but the fiery singer recently made a foray into country rock by lending her vocals to the debut solo collection from Henry Wagons of rootsy Australian band Wagons.
Entitled Expecting Company?, this seven-song collection is billed as a mini album. It's due out in North America on January 22 through Six Shooter/Thirty Tigers, though it came out earlier this fall in Australia.
Six of the tracks are duets; Mosshart is Wagons' most famous duet partner, but Canadians will be pleased to note that Jenn Grant also appears. Other featured singers are Sophia Brous, Robert Forster of the Go-Betweens, Patience Hodgson of the Grates, and Gossling. Hear the Mosshart-featuring "Unwelcome Company" at the bottom of the page.
"Having multiple voices in a song holds a certain power. They can represent a unique synergy and oneness, or have a certain schizophrenia or oppositional battle," Wagons said in a statement. "I do love a good duet. I particularly love the slightly fractured ones that reveal or give an insight into the complexity of human relationships."
The songwriter largely recorded the album in his own studio, acting as producer and playing the majority of the instruments himself. Most of the songs were written when he was sick with a fever and injured after a lightbulb exploded in his hand. The closing track, "Marylou Two," reprises the Wagons song "Marylou," and is the collection's only non-duet.
A press release explains that the singer "offers heavy doses of stomping outlaw country rock, irresistible crooning and classic songwriting." Check out the tracklist below.
